Pete Asks: Is Your Plumbing Ready for Holiday Guests?

The holidays are right around the corner, which means you may be having people over to celebrate. To make the most out of your gathering, you need to make sure your home is ready in every way – from the decorations to the cleanliness to, yes, even the plumbing. If you’re planning on having guests for the holidays, your plumbing needs to be ready.

This month, we’re turning the Ask Pete post around on our readers to get you thinking of your holiday guests and plumbing by asking: Is your plumbing ready for holiday guests?

The Question: Is Your Plumbing Ready for Holiday Guests?

Whether you’re throwing a holiday party or having relatives stay with you for an extended time, additional people in your house means added pressure on your plumbing. If your pipes are used to working for two to four people, adding a lot more can strain your plumbing system. Luckily, you can take a few different steps to get your plumbing ready for holiday guests.

Pete Says:

Getting your plumbing ready for the holidays is the best way to prevent catastrophic plumbing incidents while your guests are over. Follow these steps for drama-free plumbing this holiday season.

Prepare Your Plumbing for Guests

Drains

Instead of buying a whole bunch of liquid drain cleaner (which I don’t recommend), have your drain professionally cleaned out ahead of the holidays. Doing this will help your drain perform better when it’s doing more work than usual. I also recommend buying a drain guard to catch any large objects or hair from going down your drain and causing problems.

Water Heater

If you’ll have guests staying in your house, your water heater is sure to get a lot more action than normal. Overuse can put a strain on your water heater, so getting it serviced ahead of the holidays is a great preventative step. You can also encourage your guests to wait a bit to shower after someone else has finished.

Supplies

Having the right supplies is critical to your holiday plumbing preparedness plan. Here are some things you should have on hand:

Leaks

Before having guests over, take a walk around your home and look for any leaks or signs of a plumbing leak. I recommend doing this a week or two before your guests are scheduled to arrive. That way, there’s time to fix the problem before they show up.

Schedule a Check or Repair

The holidays are a great time to finally solve that plumbing problem that you’ve been meaning to get inspected! The best way to prepare your home plumbing for holiday guests is to schedule a plumbing check or repair before people arrive at your home.
